Story
Helen embarks on a passionate affair with a man who has no idea what her secret identity is. Caught in the crosshairs when her lover falls victim to London’s dangerous underworld, Helen’s employer calls in Sam to protect her. There’s a scene where the characters are discussing their favorite Christmas movies.
It starts out great
This is probably because Keira Knightley stars in both. Featured in Graham Norton and Likes: Cher/Keira Knightley/Michael Fassbender/Josh Brolin/Jalen Ngonda (2024). It’s one of those run-of-the-mill entertainments where you can’t really fault the acting and the production values are practically impeccable.
But John Le Carre isn’t
You think you’re about to be sucked in and seduced by a complex spy thriller. Instead, you quickly realize that it’s neither serious nor funny. As is so often the case these days, the problem is the paucity of story.
Sadly disappointing, it could have been so good
It has quirky characters, and indeed characters with all the charm and conversational wit you’d expect from psychopaths. They may be related to Eve from Killing Eve , but they’re poor cousins and don’t stack up very well on the psychopath DNA inheritance scale. It’s a cartoonish travesty of a spy thriller with a plot that relies on a thin plot and frequent action scenes to fill in the gaps.
